In a testament to the thriving biodiversity of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) and Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) proudly announced the discovery of a new avian species during its monthly bird count. The White-bellied Sea-Eagle (Icthyophaga leucogaster) graced the records, elevating the total documented bird species in the region to an impressive 233.
On May 26, 2024, the SGNP and Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary bore witness to a remarkable display of citizen science prowess, as over 42 dedicated volunteers, including BNHS members and nature enthusiasts, joined forces for the monthly bird count. Led by the BNHS in collaboration with the SGNP and Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, the event not only showcased the enthusiasm of the participants but also underscored the critical role of community involvement in conservation efforts.
The SGNP Bird Monitoring Programme, inaugurated in February 2021, marks a milestone in citizen science initiatives. Through this programme, BNHS invites bird watchers, enthusiasts, and concerned citizens to partake in the conservation journey by participating in monthly bird counts across various locations within the national park and Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary.
These bird counts serve as more than just scientific endeavors; they represent a collective commitment to preserving the natural heritage of SGNP and Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary for generations to come. By fostering a sense of ownership and stewardship among participants, the programme fosters a deeper connection between humans and the environment, paving the way for sustainable conservation practices.
As the White-bellied Sea-Eagle takes its rightful place in the annals of SGNP’s avian history, it serves as a reminder of the untold wonders awaiting discovery in our natural sanctuaries. With each bird count, we inch closer to unraveling the mysteries of these pristine ecosystems, reaffirming our duty to protect and cherish them for posterity.
