A harrowing incident unfolded in Uttarakhand’s Almora district, where four dedicated Forest department employees lost their lives while battling a fierce blaze within the Binsar wildlife sanctuary. The tragedy occurred around 3:30 p.m. local time when a Forest department vehicle became engulfed in flames, trapping its occupants. Despite efforts to rescue them, four individuals perished, while four others sustained severe injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital.

This tragedy adds to a series of unfortunate events in Almora, which has witnessed a surge in forest fire incidents this season. Since November 2023, Uttarakhand has endured 1,220 reported incidents, devastating 1,675 hectares of forest land and claiming 10 lives.

Analyzing the extent of the damage, statistics reveal a disturbing trend, with 687 hectares of forest land damaged in Garhwal, 833 hectares in Kumaon, and 132 hectares in wildlife administrative regions, further exacerbating concerns over the long-term ecological repercussions.

The alarming rise in incidents, compared to previous years, underscores the urgent need for action. Recent data revealed seven forest fire incidents in a single day, causing extensive damage across Garhwal, Kumaon, and wildlife administrative areas.

As Uttarakhand grapples with the aftermath, calls for proactive measures to prevent future tragedies grow louder. This loss of lives and ecological damage serve as poignant reminders of the imperative to protect our forests and those who risk their lives to safeguard them.
