In a recent conservation development, Rajasthan forest officials have instructed the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) to demolish a commercial property within the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) of Nahargarh Wildlife Sanctuary. The property, managed by a prominent hospitality group, reportedly began operations in 2023 without wildlife clearance from the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL).

After the NBWL’s standing committee decided in February 2024 to withhold wildlife clearance, the ESZ monitoring committee convened to ensure compliance. They unanimously agreed that the JDA would oversee the removal or demolition of the newly built hotel. This decision underscores adherence to ESZ regulations, which prohibit new commercial developments within one kilometer of protected areas, except for designated eco-tourism structures.

Confirming the directive, the ESZ committee’s decision aligns with the NBWL’s stance on denying clearance to the project.

Responding to queries, a hotel company representative stated unawareness of any official notification regarding the decision. Meanwhile, a green activist emphasized the importance of respecting ESZ regulations, which aim to preserve biodiversity and restrict commercial activities near wildlife sanctuaries. This development highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing conservation imperatives with infrastructure needs, stressing the need for strict adherence to environmental laws to safeguard natural habitats and ecosystems.
