In a significant move aimed at mitigating the impacts of human-wildlife conflict, the Maharashtra state government has announced substantial increases in compensation for victims and survivors. The announcement includes adjustments in compensation amounts for various categories affected by wildlife encounters, reflecting a proactive step towards addressing longstanding concerns of affected communities.

For the families of individuals who lose their lives due to wildlife attacks, the compensation has been raised from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 25 lakh. This adjustment acknowledges the devastating impact such incidents have on families and aims to provide greater financial support during their time of loss.

In cases of permanent disability resulting from wildlife encounters, survivors will now receive Rs 7.50 lakh, up from the previous Rs 5 lakh. Those sustaining serious injuries will be compensated with Rs 5 lakh, while victims of minor injuries will receive Rs 50,000, ensuring that varying levels of impact are appropriately addressed.

Furthermore, the maximum compensation for crop damage has been doubled to Rs 50,000 from Rs 25,000. This increase recognizes the agricultural losses incurred by farmers due to wildlife intrusions into cultivated lands, aiming to ease their financial burdens and promote sustainable farming practices.

The adjustments come amidst rising incidents of human-wildlife conflict in the state, notably highlighted by recent figures from the state forest department. In Chandrapur alone, 57 fatalities were reported due to tiger attacks in the year 2023-24, with a concerning rise from previous years.
