In a bid to attract customers, a unique owl cafe recently opened its doors in Abu Dhabi, offering visitors the opportunity to interact closely with nine different owls for a fee of 70 Dirhams (approximately $19). The concept, first of its kind in the Middle East, quickly gained attention on social media, though not all the feedback has been positive.
The cafe, named Boomah Cafe, has faced criticism from netizens who raised concerns over animal cruelty. Videos shared by the cafe showcasing staff handling the owls sparked outrage among some users, who argued that such practices exploit animals for entertainment and profit.
Responding to the backlash, a spokesperson for Boomah Cafe emphasized that the well-being of the owls is their top priority. The cafe operates from 2 pm onwards daily, allowing the owls ample rest in the morning and early afternoon before they are released to move freely once the establishment closes.
According to the cafe’s owner, some of the owls, like Venus the Tawny Owl, are unable to survive in the wild due to disabilities and have found a safe and caring environment at Boomah Cafe. Venus, for instance, has a wing disability that prevents her from flying long distances.
The cafe also provides educational opportunities for visitors to learn about the owls, with options to observe the birds from a distance if preferred, thanks to glass partitions in their living area. Despite these assurances, criticism continues to mount online, with calls to end the use of animals for entertainment purposes.
Boomah Cafe’s initiative has undeniably sparked a conversation about the ethical treatment of animals in such commercial ventures, reflecting ongoing debates regarding the balance between conservation, education, and animal welfare in entertainment settings.
