In a significant move towards wildlife conservation, the 12-kilometer elevated section of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway has been designed with special provisions to ensure the safety of terrestrial and avian species. The project incorporates innovative measures aimed at minimizing the impact of infrastructure development on the region’s rich biodiversity.

A key feature of the initiative is the installation of uniquely designed lighting systems on both sides of the elevated road. These lights are specifically engineered to enhance visibility while reducing the risk of collisions for flying birds, particularly wild birds and owls that inhabit the surrounding areas.

The lighting design marks a pioneering effort, as it is the first time in the country that such an approach has been implemented on an elevated roadway. Unlike the standard white lights installed at a height of 35 meters with 136 lumens, this project will feature yellow lights positioned at a height of 7.5 meters. This adjustment aims to create a more wildlife-friendly environment without compromising road safety for drivers.

The yellow lighting offers several ecological benefits. It reduces the attraction for insects, thereby minimizing disturbances to the local ecosystem. Additionally, this type of lighting is less disruptive to nocturnal wildlife, particularly owls, by maintaining a sense of darkness essential for their natural behavior.

Uttarakhand’s forests, through which the expressway passes, are home to a diverse range of owl species, each playing a vital role in the ecosystem. Notable species include the Indian Owl, known for its distinctive appearance and calls, and the Snowy Owl, easily identifiable by its striking white feathers. The Brown Fish Owl thrives near lakes and rivers, while the smaller Jungle Owlet prefers dense forests, making it a favorite among birdwatchers.

The Common Barn Owl, recognized by its heart-shaped face, is commonly found in open fields, while the Great Horned Owl, with its tufted head, adds to the region’s avian diversity.

This innovative approach underscores the importance of balancing infrastructure development with wildlife conservation, setting a precedent for future projects across the country.
