In the arid landscapes of Pune, Maharashtra, a silent crisis is unfolding for its wildlife inhabitants. With drought conditions persisting and water sources drying up, the local fauna are facing severe challenges to their survival. However, amidst this crisis, a collective effort is underway to provide essential support to these vulnerable creatures.

Pune and its surrounding regions have been grappling with a water scarcity crisis exacerbated by below-average rainfall and environmental factors. This has resulted in the depletion of natural water sources critical for the survival of wildlife, including numerous species of mammals, birds, and reptiles that depend on these waterholes for hydration.

In response to this dire situation, estimates suggest that around 1,100 tankers will be required to supply water across 12 wildlife ranges in Pune. Each range, with approximately 40 waterholes, serves as a lifeline for countless animals struggling to cope with the effects of prolonged drought.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, residents and contractors have stepped up to the challenge. Half of the required tanker demand has already been met through the efforts of local communities, who understand the importance of supporting the wildlife during this critical period.

One such initiative involves residents collaborating with wildlife officials to organize regular water supply runs to the affected ranges. These acts of solidarity highlight the deep-rooted connection between the people of Pune and the natural world that surrounds them.

In response to the ongoing crisis, government agencies are also taking action. The Pune Forest Department, in collaboration with local authorities and conservation organizations, is working on long-term solutions to mitigate the impact of drought on wildlife habitats.

Efforts include initiatives to restore and conserve natural water sources, such as desilting existing waterholes and creating new ones in strategic locations. These measures aim to sustainably support wildlife populations beyond the immediate challenges posed by the current drought.
